My kids and I have been discussing getting a dog. We had a Shiba Inu but when we moved, he kept going back to my Mom's house, so he's her dog now. Previously, all of our pets, we had just sort of taken in, this time we are trying to choose a breed that is right for us.
If you have experience with one of the breeds listed, list what you like or dislike about that breed in the comment section. Feel free to add a breed if you think it would a good fit for us, but please don't add a breed just because it hasn't been listed yet. Some of the more exotic breeds are not only expensive, they are difficult to aquire, so please keep that in mind as well.
Traits we are looking for:
Size: Medium or smaller preferred
Grooming: little shedding/ grooming preferred
Temperment: Friendly, affectionate, but not too dependent
Activity: Little to Moderate exercise needed, not too hyper
Trainability: on the easy side
Intelligence: Smart, but not so smart they are hard to train
Kids: They must be good with older children (kids are 8 &11)
Other animals: Should be able to tolerate other animals
Our Traits:
Kids: 2 girls, 8 & 11
Noise level: Our house is usually quite noisy
Activity: Moderate
Yard: Medum sized fenced back yard
Pit Bulls, Chow Chows, Dobermans, Mastiffs and Great Danes are automatically disqualified, and will not be considered no matter what. So please don't add them. Also, we don't want biters or barkers. Thanks!
I would just like to mention that we have no intention of buying from a pet store, we do not support puppy mills. There are many reputable small breeders here in the 4-state area where we live.

my tip is, not to take a pure breed for health reasons... most pure breeds have health problems. most of them suffer badly with their joints... people I know either big or small dog fan, had lame hind legs, bone splinters in the joints, high costs for rheumatism and artritis... of course you can always just put down the dogs ones it gets pain!
good one is labrador and (name forgotten, but looks like this fella on the pic) as a mix... fun loving, likes to be trained, loves to walk, good with kids, and guards as well without being scary... [show less]

and as this is one of the most ancient breeds, health problems related to pure breds are not significant, expect 12-14 years [show less]

All the breed "quizzes" put this dog at the top for us, but I am unsure if we would be good for this dog.

This breed keeps popping up, but they tend to bark a lot, I've been told.

We've had one of these. Quiet, clean, good with kids, but can be stubborn and dificult to train. Escape artists and they like to roam free.

how come the great dane is disqualified? it is one of the most gentle dogs after the greyhound? just wondering...
I had a bad experience with a Great Dane as a child. And they are just TOO big. A medium or smaller dog would be better suited for our house and yard.
I understand. thanks for replying
