Depending on your system, there may be several reasons for this. you will want to make sure your system has DMA enabled for the DVD-ROM, to enable faster transfers. you will also want to examine how your system is displaying Video. some video cards will handle hardware decoding of video playback, we encourage you to look to the manufacturers site for details on this. if your system cannot decode video playback via hardware, you will have to use software decoding. Use of software based decoding will yield different play back results, that depend on your systems speed, RAM and such. Hardware decoding is preffered. [show less]

If you are using an external DVD-ROM, make sure that it is plugged in to a USB 2.0 enabled port, or you will see a serious decrease in performance and speed.

Actually, I'm referring to DVD players, as one would find in a home theater, not a DVD-ROM drive in a computer.
