It's not possible to choose a best from a list of such immense talents, but there was no one like Laura Nyro. Gone long before her time, she was one of the half dozen most astonishing American voices of the last century. Nyro reworked soul and jazzy chops from the folk vein, but with odd, unexpected song structures. Rock journalism has long painted her as a sweet soul but there was a ferocity underneath that makes her sound very contemporary. In a better world, she'd be as appreciated as Madonna...
