Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope)

#2

Star Wars, later released as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, is a 1977 space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the first of six films released in the Star Wars saga; three later films precede the story in the series' internal chronology. Ground-breaking in its use of special-effects, this first Star Wars movie is one of the most successful films of all time and is generally considered one of the most influential as well.

The Matrix

#3
Okay, so Keanu sucks, but every science fiction movie made since has tried to bite off The Matrix. No other movie on this list is as influential or deep.

LOL - how true, its as if no good movies were made earlier than 1970-ish.

I don't care when it was made, but Star Wars is the best movie ever. I mean... COME ON! It's Star Wars!

The only way that Star Wars could ever be the best movie ever is if it suddenly became Student Bodies.

Star Wars really isn't that great of a story. There isn't a clear Protagonist and it is "A Hero's Journey" almost down to the letter.

I'll give you that it is a good deal better than some of the movies on this list, but it is certianly not the "Best Movie".

@NoahVail

that just selection bias, based on the demographics of GrupThink -- most of y'all are so young that you haven't seen many of the classics yet!

i guess old movies just don't feel relevant to our generation?
besides, it makes sense that as our society (and technology) progresses, we'll continue to make better stuff than in the past...

It depends what you call a "good movie"
If special effects and such are more important to you then yes you got a point myimaginaryband, but telling a good story never required high tech

I took the courtesy of adding the greatest movie ever made, "The Lion in Winter" starring Peter O'Toole. You can all thank me later.

There is definitely a discrepancy between the best movie and the most influential movie.

On my list, there are many influential and obscure movies. For instance, Casablanca, American Psycho, Pink Flamingos, Oldboy, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Anything by Coen Bros.

It's really hard to pinpoint the absolute best.

My own all-time favorite, "The Ten Commandments," is never even in the running, yet it is/was such an amazingly great film in all ways!
