On July 3, 2001, the all time record for hot dogs and buns at the Nathan's Famous contest was 25-1/8. On July 4, 2001, the record stood at 50. This is the most stupendous achievement in the history of sport. Kobayashi doubled the record at a stroke. His achievement is the equivalent of a two-minute mile. Not only that, he has reigned supreme for six years, and only this year was anyone able to mount a credible challenge. Moreover, Kobayashi made competitive eating a legitimate sport in America. He raised the sport to a higher level, and inspired his colleagues and competitors to do better and better, to the point where this year someone was able to mount a respectable challenge. [show less]
