This goes hand in hand with editing comments, but with a slightly different perspective. Comments are often made asking a question or for clarification of the question. Once the question has been answered, it would make sense to delete the comment - perhaps it's just housekeeping, but I think it would be a good facility.

Maybe the moderations will take care of this now. The community should now bury comments that have become irrelevant .
A group of comments, most of the time, form a discussion. Take a way one comment from the middle of the group and that thing that might have been a discussion becomes something less. These discussions are part of the content of the website that I think that no one should be allowed to adulterate them by deleting them or part of them.
Banana steel pigeon obliterate!
For example, Avatar had just shown us a comment that could normally be deleted, BUT because I have referenced this comment then it should not be deleted; it has now become part of the discussion. Thank you Avatar.
Well said -- we've often contemplated the 'greater than the sum of its parts' aspect to the fabric of an online community. You can't rip out a thread and expect the whole to remain intact.
Remember when we could vote to hide stuff for a while there? That was cool. We should do that again. Because seeing comments that are still around after being given like negative forty points makes me think that "modding" anything is a totally futile course of action.
