He's miserable, a drug addict, and brilliant at deduction. The only time he is interested in ANYTHING is when there is a case that can't be diagnosed (or solved). It sounds a little like Sherlock Holmes. Almost a rip off if you ask me.
he's supposed to be like Sherlock Holmes. The creators of the show admit that's who the character is modeled after.
And, I'm not sure it's just a coincidence; but Holmes => home => House ?
Yes it is inspired in Sherlock Holmes but house is NOT a detective
There's a very thin line between diagnostic medicine (especially the kind that House does) and detective work. They both rely on subtle clues to find out who/what may be killing someone (or already has); both have to deal with lying suspects; both break and enter with less-than-legal means to find clues; etc.
After a little more Sherlocking around *ahem* i found out the Holmes > home > House connection *is* intentional. Also, interestingly enough, Sherlock Holmes was originally based on Joseph Bell, a diagnostician and pioneer of forensic medicine; it all comes full circle...
If any doctor deserves to be on this list; it's House (or Joseph Bell, but he's not fictional...)
