MySQL is the fast, simple-to-use database engine driving the vast majority of open source-powered websites, for which its excellent read performance is ideal. It is easily "the world's most popular open source database," as its commercial proponent MySQL AB asserts.

For times, I was a bit skeptical about MySQL. I prefered PostgreSQL. But it's getting better and better. Especially the several different database engines (MyISAM, InnoDB, SolidDB, Falcon and many other, letting manage databases in memory, with CSV files or as OLAP hypercube) make it very powerful, now.
