Martin Beck is the main character of ten novels by Swedish Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Those novels have all been produced as movies. Beck is an inspector of the Stockholm police. He is an anti-hero, there is nothing heroic about him, he is a human being like you and I. Walter Matthau played Beck in 1973 in The Laughing Policeman.
