I am a deeply superficial person. —Andy Warhol

If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There’s nothing behind it. —Andy Warhol

Ass* maybe, but not a phony. Just deeply superficial.

I disagree- if you yourself say you are superficial, you've cast considerable doubt on that by being aware and honest.

At any rate, I think some of his work shows him not to be a phony. He did express and reflect on American society and culture, if one can call it culture. I think his most widely-known pieces put the commercial superficiality that surrounds us daily 'in our face'. He was a designer/illustrator before he made art for its own sake, and that served his purpose very well in art.

A couple of his films, which were basically documentary ("Trash" for instance) I found profoundly depressing. For me, that doesn't jibe with superficiality.

In the Wikipedia bio, fwiw, surprising information that belies a fundamental superficiality, whether one can relate to it or not:
"Warhol was a practicing Byzantine Rite Catholic. He regularly volunteered at homeless shelters in New York, particularly during the busier times of the year, and described himself as a religious person... a body of religious-themed works was found posthumously in his estate. Warhol also regularly attended Mass during his life, and the priest at Warhol's church, Saint Vincent's, said that the artist went there almost daily."

Huh- I never thought I would find myself defending Warhol, though- Grupthink can be a beautiful thing!
