It's interesting if you follow the parallels of the entertainment that was offered at the time and the entertainment that our society is becoming slowly obsessed with.

When the empire started, public entertainment was limited and usually local to where people live.

As time went on, the locations for the entertainment grew larger and larger. Eventually, massive stadiums were erected and there were theatrical events on such a grand scale that they would stage fake water battles by flooding massive coliseums.

Then, the entertainment grew more violent as the crowds grew and the populace started to falter under its own size.

Eventually, the demand was for watching human beings in ridiculous conditions fighting for a prize (life, death, fame, fortune...)

This can be seen in the evolution of sports we have seen on TV and the absolutely massive amount of money that is being spent on entertainment for the masses.

It can also be seen in the reality T.V. universe that has been created.
