Before any of all y'all right-wing Christians get butt hurt, this is a commonly accepted view. the adoption of Christianity in Rome eventually led to the empire being split into two. Do your research!

Hardline Christianity - a backlash. Like Rome, our society started out with a pretty ascetic set of values and got looser and looser as we expanded our territory and improved our technology and focused more on luxury, variety, entertainment and personalities.
